Lowensvlei has presented part-time short courses on Commercial Floristry on the farm for 8 years, with the last course presented at the request of the Department of Education.

The courses are presented at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels by an international Interflora judge with 40 years’ experience in floristry.

The courses are unique in that they take place on an operational commercial fresh flower farm and so provide trainees with a background of how flowers are grown, thereby giving a foundation for a good relationship between florist and grower.

The courses provide an opportunity for flower wholesalers and florists to train their staff, and have attracted people who want to start businesses, or who already have businesses as florists, events planners, caterers, hoteliers or funeral directors.

Those who have completed the training have spring boarded their businesses to new success and status levels.

The content outline of the Beginners Course is:
  1. Caring for flowers
  2. Elements and principles of design
  3. Line designs - symmetrical, asymmetrical, vertical, horizontal, round
  4. Bridal work - wiring of flowers, buttonholes, corsages, bridal bouquets
  5. Modern designs
  6. Funeral work - wreaths
  7. Bouquets and presentation gift bouquets
The course consists of 10 x 2 hour classes at a cost of R180 per lesson which includes training, flowers, materials and refreshments.

The Intermediate Course builds on the foundation of the first course by using a combination of lines, and introduces other materials and textures into the designs.

The course is 10 x 2 hour classes at a cost of R200 per lesson which includes training, flowers, materials and refreshments.

The advanced course is suitable for competition work.

Unfortunately we can only enrol groups of 10 people per course and course fees are payable in advance. This means that you would need to get together a group of 10 people before booking, as we no longer have the capacity to follow up on individual bookings.
